Waiting their turn for tickets

Soldiers queuing for refreshments. The sign just on the edge of the photograph reads, 'Tea and Sandwiches 30 cent. Pay Here.' Behind the sign is a rather grimy tepee tent with its flap open. A trestle table has been set up in front of this. A soldier who has put on a white jacket over his uniform tunic, is standing behind the table holding tickets, possibly selling them to the uniformed men who are queuing at the table. A sergeant standing a little in front of the queue is looking at the camera, . . .

Soldiers embarking on home leave, France, during World War I. This photograph shows a group of soldiers about to embark on a ship for home leave. A sergeant major is collecting their home leave tickets. Two of the men may be from the US army as they have American service hats. A large town can be seen behind the ship's funnels.
