Airmail pilot Edward Killgoreby Smithsonian InstitutionDescription: Army Lieutenant Edward W. Killgore was one of the Army pilots who flew the mail for the Post Office Department in the first three months of airmail service (May 18 August 9, 1918). Killgore autographed this photograph and presented it to Benjamin Lipsner. Lipsner, a former army captain, had resigned his military position to serve as the first Superintendent of the U.S. Airmail Service.
