Der Begriff deutsch leitet sich vom Althochdeutschen "th(i/e)(u/o)disk" ab, was ursprünglich "diejenigen, die die Volkssprache sprechen" (germanisch "theoda": Volk) bedeutete, im Gegensatz zu jenen, die eine keltische oder romanische Sprache sprechen. Das Wort Deutsch (deutsch) kann folgende Bedeutungen haben: die deutsche Sprache, das Volk der Deutschen, ein Staatsbürger der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, siehe Deutscher, den Deutschunterricht an Schulen, deutschsprachige Länder und Regionen sowie die Eigenschaft einer Sache, einer Person oder eines Begriffs (z.B. deutsche Geschichte).
