Das Wort Design (aus dem lateinischen von designare: (be)zeichnen) bedeutet meistens Entwurf und Formgebung, im Regelfall auch unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Schönheit. Im Deutschen wird Design mit zweierlei Bedeutungen versehen. Einerseits beschreibt es den Prozess des bewussten Gestaltens einer Sache. Andererseits dient es als Sammelbegriff für alle bewusst gestalteten Aspekte dieser Sache. Die heute dominierende Bedeutung des englischen Wortes Design wurde ab 1933 von Lehrern des deutschen Bauhauses im englischen Sprachraum geprägt. Sie emigrierten nach der Zerschlagung des Bauhauses durch die Nationalsozialisten in die USA, lehrten dort an Universitäten und suchten einen passenden Begriff für das deutsche Wort Gestaltung. Die Gestaltungsdisziplinen lassen sich in die drei Teilbereiche Kommunikation-, Interface- und Produktdesign untergliedern.
