Das Ergebnis des Crackens oder auch das Arbeitsziels eines Crackers. Cracken ist ursprünglich ein Begriff aus der Ölindustrie
und bezeichnet das Zerlegen/Aufbrechen der Rohölmoleküle.
In die Liste der häufigsten Suchbegriffe kam der Crack, weil der "Aufbruch" von Software-Sicherungsmassnahmen eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für Softwarepiraterie ist. Auch der Aufbruch eines Servers (Erlangung eines unberechtigten Zugangs zu einem Server) wird als Crack bezeichnet.
Hacker und Cracker nutzen im Prinzip dieselben Methoden, um einen Hack/Crack durchzuführen. Während der Hacker jedoch lediglich die Schwächen des Systems offenlegt und allenfalls den Stolz des Systemadministrators beschädigt, nutzt der Cracker sein Wissen für illegale oder vandalistische Aktivitäten.
